UNDERSTANDING DEATH

📓Ecclesiastes 7:1
_A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death is better than the day of birth. (NIV)_

Death is the departure from this life. In other words, it is the end of life on earth. Death is part of life; everyone will eventually face it. The Scripture says, "And just as each person is destined to die once and after that [death] comes judgment" - Hebrews 9:27 (nlt). Apparently, death is the end of life on earth and not the end. That is to say, all is not finished after death as some people assume. It actually marks the beginning of judgment; it is the beginning of either eternal life with God or eternal damnation with Satan. Besides, death is like migrating from your country to another country. The difference is that, there is no return.

Many people fear death and for that matter hardly think about it. They go to funerals to mourn the dead without thinking of death itself. They forget that one day someone will also attend their funerals. Yet, we must think about death and understand it. For understanding death is understanding the purpose of life. From our opening verse, it's obvious that Solomon understood death and realized that deathday is better than birthday. Yes! Deathday is better than birthday. How many of us see it as so? We spend time thinking of how to celebrate our birthdays. We love to receive gifts and best wishes from love ones on our birthdays, but hate to think of the day we will die. How ignorant! Whether we like it or not we will eventually die, so we must think of death and prepare to face it.

Beloved, death is inevitable, but don't live your life foolishly and thoughtlessly and say that, "after all I will die." Instead, realize that after all there is judgment. Know that death marks the end of your body and not your soul; it marks the beginning of another life which is eternal. Besides, as a Christian, don't allow the fear of death to engulf you because it is only the beginning of eternal life with God. Woe to anyone who is not living for Christ; he or she will end up in hell after death. To conclude, if you would understand and realize that deathday is better than birthday, you would declare as Paul declared, "For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ..." - Philippians 1:21-22 (nlt).
